One of NIDA’s most important goals is to translate what scientists learn from research, in order to help the public better understand drug abuse and addiction, and to develop more effective strategies for their prevention, treatment, drug detox and drug rehabilitation. We hope that this compilation of scientific information on cocaine will help to inform readers about the harmful effects of cocaine abuse, and that it will assist in prevention and treatment efforts.

Drug addiction is a life-shattering illness. It rips families apart and breaks people down. It all starts with that one little hit and the thought that you can quit whenever you want. It has many end results: living on the streets, alienating your family and friends, death. For most addicts, drug addiction is a lifelong illness, with relapses even after long periods with no drug abuse. Drug addiction is rarely arrested without the help of an addiction treatment program or a stay at a luxury residential drug addiction treatment facility.

A drug addict is defined as a person who is unable to live a normal life without drugs. He or she has a continuous craving for a certain drug. All aspects of his or her social life is disrupted because of this addiction. Addicts may be either mentally or physically dependent on a drug. The addict who is mentally dependent takes the drug to feel psychologically refreshed, mentally functional etc. The physically dependent drug addict shows physical signs if the substance is not available to them. I have so many gifts yet to give you, and so much more for you to do.” I am convinced it was God speaking, but I continued to use.
A routine health screening indicated that finally after all those years, the drugs were taking it’s toll. I was finally forced to make a choice: sobriety, health and life or drugs, illness and an early death. I needed drug addiction treatment and I chose sobriety, health and life. I have not had a drink or used drugs in ten months. How did I do this? I got my ass up, found the nearest drug treatment center and dove in headfirst. Where I landed was at a high-end residential drug treatment center. I opened my ears, shut my mouth and listened for the first time in many many years. What I heard was “hope,” and today I am hopeful.

The other day I asked my brother what his time in the drug addiction treatment center was like. He was really hesitant to talk to me about it, but he eventually came around. He told me about how terrible his life as a crack addict was, first. He said that it was important that I know that before anything else. He told me how hard it was having an addiction to something inanimate and how hard it was having it control your every move. He said that once I understood that I would understand how great it was getting away from that. He told me that the drug addiction treatment center was literally like a light in the darkness. He told me how hard it was to be a prisoner in your own body and how great it was to be emancipated. It was then that I realized that I would never truly understand where my brother was coming from. He told me how much drug rehab treatment had done for him and how it had made him into the man he was today. My brother’s pain had been ended by the drug addiction treatment center that he went to and that was all I really needed to know.

If you’re a victim of addiction, you aren’t going to get better outside of a drug addiction treatment center. You just aren’t. Drug rehab is vital to the addiction recovery process, because addiction is a disease, not a choice. Addicts don’t “decide” to use drugs. By the same token, they can’t simply “decide” to get better. Sobriety, in the end, is and must be a product of clinical drug treatment, administered by expert caregivers at private drug rehab centers. Anyone who tells you otherwise just doesn’t get it.

The obvious rub here is that you’ve got to find the strength to take the first step. Enrolling in a drug addiction treatment center is never easy, because enrolling in a drug addiction center means admitting you have a problem you can’t fix by yourself. But here’s the thing: You don’t have a choice. The care you get in a rehab center, from a rehab program, will save your life. With the stakes as high they are, any other course of action just isn’t acceptable.
